SUMMARY:ASGA Call 81: Will Harris on Regenerative Solar Grazing and a Bold Return to Giving a Damn
DESCRIPTION:It’s an understatement to say that Will Harris strongly believes in his bold vision for how agriculture can be done to make things better for people\, animals\, and the land. He’s living that vision by practicing regenerative grazing (also known as “regenerative agriculture”) on White Oak Pastures in Bluffton\, GA\, the farm that has been in his family since 1866. A fourth-generation cattleman\, Will Harris is now applying what he’s learned over the decades to solar sheep grazing and exploring the opportunities for grazing cattle under solar panels. Will is joining us for a special interview at our ASGA October Webinar. We’ll talk about his story\, his vision for regenerative agriculture\, and how solar grazing fits into that picture. Expect to hear about the opportunities (and challenges) for solar sheep and solar cattle\, how it can provide opportunities for farmers and local communities\, and how it will help improve the land and ecosystems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nWill Harris is a fourth-generation cattleman\, who tends the same land that his great-grandfather settled in 1866. Born and raised at White Oak Pastures\, Will left home to attend the University of Georgia’s School of Agriculture\, where he was trained in the industrial farming methods that had taken hold after World War II. Will graduated in 1976 and returned to Bluffton where he and his father continued to raise cattle using pesticides\, herbicides\, hormones\, and antibiotics. They also fed their herd a high-carbohydrate diet of corn and soy. These tools did a fantastic job of taking the cost out of the system\, but in the mid-1990s Will became disenchanted with the excesses of these industrialized methods. They had created a monoculture for their cattle\, and\, as Will says\, “nature abhors a monoculture.” In 1995\, Will made the audacious decision to return to the farming methods his great-grandfather had used 130 years before. Since Will has successfully implemented these changes\, he has been recognized all over the world as a leader in humane animal husbandry and environmental sustainability. Will is the immediate past President of the Board of Directors of Georgia Organics. He is the Beef Director of the American Grassfed Association and was selected 2011 Business Person of the year for Georgia by the Small Business Administration. Will lives in his family home on the property with his wife Yvonne. He is the proud father of three daughters\, Jessi\, Jenni\, and Jodi. His favorite place in the world to be is out in pastures\, where he likes to have a big coffee at sunrise and a 750ml glass of wine at sunset.

SUMMARY:ALB Pennsylvania Solar Grazing Workshop: Fall 2024
DESCRIPTION:The American Lamb Board just announced their fall Certified Solar Grazing Training Workshop for Pennsylvania! \n\n\n\nFall Workshop Details: \n\n\n\n\nLocation: Shippensburg\, Pennsylvania\n\n\n\nDates: October 30 – November 1\, 2024                  \n\n\n\nRegistration Fee: $200              \n\n\n\nContact for Information: Camren Maierle at Camren@americanlamb.com       \n\n\n\nSeats Available: Limited to 50 producers\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nFrom their announcement: \n\n\n\nThe rapid expansion of utility-scale solar farms and the need for effective vegetation management have created a growing demand for sheep grazing as a natural solution. Sheep grazing is increasingly being used in solar farms\, wildfire-prone areas\, and vineyards. By eliminating dry vegetation that could fuel wildfires and helping control weeds without herbicides\, grazing also supports environmental sustainability. \n\n\n\nThese paid grazing contracts offer a significant growth opportunity for the U.S. sheep industry. Expanding flocks to meet this demand could increase the supply of American Lamb\, make it more price competitive\, and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through both renewable energy and biological vegetation management. This trend benefits both established and emerging sheep producers by boosting profitability and encouraging flock expansion. \n\n\n\nThe American Lamb Board (ALB) is prioritizing sustainability and growth within the U.S. sheep industry. According to ALB Chair Jeff Ebert\, the board is committed to supporting both new and experienced shepherds with the necessary education and resources to succeed in contract grazing. \n\n\n\nTo that end\, ALB is hosting grazing workshops that provide an overview of opportunities related to fire suppression\, vineyard grazing\, and solar grazing. These workshops will cover essential topics such as animal performance\, contracts\, and business setup\, equipping participants with the skills they need to thrive in grazing services. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will provide valuable training to help ensure participants can capitalize on grazing contract opportunities and grow their operations profitably.

SUMMARY:ASGA Call 82: Tools for Solar Pollinator Vegetation Planning + Grazing Compatibility
DESCRIPTION:Pollinator vegetation on solar sites has become an increasingly important component of solar site development\, especially as communities and states institute new requirements and incentives. Designing\, installing\, establishing\, and maintaining plant communities on large solar arrays can be costly and complex\, and getting it wrong can be costly. To help the solar industry navigate the use of pollinator vegetation\, the Pollinator Habitat Aligned with Solar Energy (PHASE) project\, funded by a U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office grant\, created a series of tools to help developers\, owners\, and land managers navigate vegetation management decisions. For this webinar\, Dan Salas of the University of Illinois Chicago\, will discuss several tools provided by the PHASE project to help plan and implement pollinator vegetation\, including tools cost comparison\, seed mix selection\, and pollinator implementation manual. He’ll cover case studies of developers using the tools for planning vegetation on their sites. \n\n\n\nDuring the presentation\, we’ll also discuss what would be needed to expand these vegetation management tools to plan for sites with pollinators and grazing and what might go into tools for designing grazing on sites. That conversation will touch on the compatibility of grazing sheep on sites seeded for pollinator habitats. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nDan Salas\, University of Illinois Chicago\n\n\n\nLexie Hain\, Lightsource bp\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\nThanks to our sponsor!

SUMMARY:ASGA Call 83: Solar Grazing for Fire Mitigation and Prevention with Ryan Indart
DESCRIPTION:Fire prevention on solar sites is a major area of concern throughout the country and most asset owners are required by insurance to manage vegetation for fire risk. One of the most essential roles sheep can play on solar sites is managing vegetation to mitigate and prevent fire risks\, a job that targeted grazing with sheep is well suited for. It is especially important in California where fire mitigation/prevention is one the primary responsibilities of solar grazing in addition to preventing shading. \n\n\n\nAt our December webinar\, California solar grazier and ASGA advisory board member Ryan Indart (Indart Solar Sheep Grazing) will discuss the intricacies of solar grazing for fire mitigation and prevention. He has extensive experience grazing sites throughout California and he’ll share what the fire risks are and the potential impacts of a fire on site. He’ll go over how he manages sheep and vegetation and why sheep grazing is a great solution for fire risks\, as well as the importance of doing it carefully and correctly. Dan Macon from UC Cooperative Extension will also join the call to discuss the fire ecology from the targeted grazing perspective in California. To round out the discussion\, we’ll have a representative from the solar asset management side talk about requirements for operators and how they approach fire risk. \n\n\n\nHosts: Kevin Richardson (ASGA) and Ely Valdez \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:ASGA Call 84: Traditional Lamb Market opportunities for Solar Grazing
DESCRIPTION:With 70-75% of lamb consumed in the U.S. imported from other countries\, solar grazing presents an important opportunity to expand domestic lamb production. For our January webinar\, ASGA is partnering with the American Lamb Board to help solar graziers and solar companies understand lamb marketing opportunities.  \n\n\n\nThe sheep industry markets lambs through two primary channels\, often referred to as the traditional and non-traditional markets. Opportunities exist in the traditional markets with the expansion of the U.S. sheep industry through various segments\, one of which is solar grazing. At the webinar\, representatives of two of the largest first handlers or processors\, Superior Farms and Wolverine Packing\, will share their experiences and describe marketing opportunities from lamb contracts to carcass preferences of retail and food service customers. \n\n\n\nRegister here. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nDale Brooks\, Wolverine Packing\n\n\n\nCamren Maierle\, American Lamb Board\n\n\n\nBrian Phelan\, Superior Farms\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:5th Annual Membership Meeting: American Solar Grazing Association
DESCRIPTION:What an incredible year for solar grazing and ASGA’s community! The American Solar Grazing Association was at the heart of an industry that is taking off faster than any of us could imagine. Solar grazing surpassed well over 100\,000 acres and 100\,000 sheep. Our membership grew to 1\,100 members and counting as more and more people took to this opportunity. At agriculture and energy conferences across the country\, we could feel the energy around solar grazing and agrivoltaics as both industries increasingly embraced grazing after years of hard work by our members. Nowhere was that more apparent than when we brought sheep to the country’s biggest energy convention at RE+ and captured the attention of 45\,000 attendees. \n\n\n\nThat success truly belongs to the American Solar Grazing Association’s members. Our solar grazing members innovated to make solar grazing the best way to manage vegetation on solar and rapidly expanded it. Our solar firm members helped their companies embrace solar grazing and find ways to facilitate fruitful farmer partnerships\, while our research\, nonprofit\, and enthusiast members grew agrivoltaics knowledge and promoted it across the country (and world). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo energize that growth\, ASGA created new resources\, added staff\, created a solar grazier training program\, and produced the first-ever solar grazing documentary\, all while growing our programming and network. \n\n\n\nJoin us for our 5th Annual Membership Meeting to celebrate the accomplishments of this past year and look ahead to solar grazing’s exciting future. The event will be hosted by ASGA’s leadership. \n\n\n\nHere are some of what you’ll hear about at the meeting: \n\n\n\n\nAn update on the first ASGA Certification for Solar Grazing Training program\n\n\n\nOur community’s growth and activities\, including big developments at ASGA\n\n\n\nASGA’s first documentary film – Pastures and Panels\n\n\n\nThe essential resources produced out of our NYSERDA and NREL grants\n\n\n\nAnd much more!\n\n\n\n\nASGA members will vote in new Board of Directors members and meet your leadership team.

SUMMARY:ASGA Call 87: Solar Grazing and the Targeted Grazing Handbook
DESCRIPTION:When sheep ranchers manage their flock on solar sites\, they are continuing the rich agricultural history of targeted grazing in the United States and realizing its many established benefits for a new type of client: the solar industry. \n\n\n\nFor this month’s webinar\, we’re tapping into the resources of the wider targeted grazing world by inviting the folks who wrote the book on targeted grazing. Dr. John Walker (Emeritus Professor\, Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension) and Erica Sanko (American Sheep Industry Association) will be presenting ASI’s new handbook\, Targeted Grazing 101: Starting and Sustaining a Grazing Service Enterprise. The handbook teaches practical\, applied skills gathered from interviews with more than three dozen experienced targeted grazers to help aspiring grazers understand what it takes to thrive in the industry. \n\n\n\nAfter the presentation\, ASGA Board Members Jonathan Barter and Ryan Indart will discuss how targeted grazing applies to the solar site context. They’ll address what’s similar between traditional targeted grazing operations and solar grazing. Expect to learn about the unique challenges that operating sheep on solar sites presents\, including some of the particularities of serving solar companies and managing vegetation around solar arrays. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nASGA Call 87: Solar Grazing and the Targeted Grazing HandbookMonday\, May 5th at 6:00pm ET \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nASGA is pleased to have had the opportunity to support the solar grazing aspects of this handbook as part of the publication review team. Lexie Hain (ASGA President\, Lightsource bp) provided her expertise to the publication. JR Howard (ASGA Advisory Board) and Ryan Indart (ASGA Board of Directors) provided case studies to the project\, and a number of ASGA members contributed to the handbook.  \n\n\n\nSolar graziers and solar owners and operators might want to consider having a copy of this valuable resource on hand. You can purchase a copy of the Targeted Grazing 101 handbook here: https://www.sheepusa.org/product/targeted-grazing-101 \n\n\n\nRegistration here.

SUMMARY:NDSU and UMN Extension Sheep Solar Grazing Producer Panel
DESCRIPTION:Sheep producers will share their firsthand experiences with grazing sheep under solar panels at the new agrivoltaics webinar series hosted by North Dakota State University Extension and University of Minnesota Extension at 7 p.m. on May 20. Panelists will address logistics\, animal husbandry and business management skills needed to successfully graze solar sites for vegetation management. \n\n\n\nGuest speakers will discuss how the innovative practice of agrivoltaics impacts their operations\, as well as the environmental benefits\, the economic considerations and the practical challenges faced in managing livestock alongside renewable energy infrastructure. \n\n\n\nSheep solar grazing producer panelists include Jodee Nohner\, the grazing coordinator for Minnesota Native Landscapes. Nohner brings a rich heritage of agricultural expertise as a fifth-generation sheep farmer. For the past two years\, Nohner has been a key team member in the grazing division at MNL\, a progressive operation managing 1\,500 hair sheep for solar grazing and restoration projects.  \n\n\n\nOlivia Halbur is the fourth generation to farm on her husband’s family farm in Fond du Lac\, Wisconsin. They recently leased 30 acres of their farm for 5 megawatts of solar energy production so that her family could still farm those acres by grazing the sheep. Halbur manages the vegetation with Texel sheep grazing under the solar panels. \n\n\n\nEvan Gunthorp\, along with his parents\, owns Traditional Grazing Solutions\, a company based in LaGrange\, Indiana. The company offers comprehensive vegetation management with mechanical mowing to supplement their focus on grazing. Currently\, Traditional Grazing manages and owns 900 ewes grazing on 900 acres of solar land. \n\n\n\nLearn more: https://www.ndsu.edu/agriculture/extension/events/ndsu-and-umn-extension-host-agrivoltaics-webinar-series-highlighting-sheep-solar \n\n\n\n\nEvent Page

SUMMARY:Answering the Energy & Agriculture Emergencies in Farming Communities Pt 1
DESCRIPTION:Join the Solar Farm Summit community on Zoom or YouTube June 4 at 11AM ET for a preview of the incredibly robust program the 2025 Solar Farm Summit\, the details about the student Dual-Use Design Competition and 2025 North American Agrivoltaics Awards finalists and voting process\, and start digging into the foundational forces driving the dual-use development renaissance forward in the first of a short summer webinar series featuring our very own Executive Producer\, and global macro strategist\, Dan French! \n\n\n\nA “new” solar renaissance is starting to add-value to agriculture and harvest compelling results around the world in revolutionary dual-use developments known as “agrivoltaics\,” or solar farms able to be agriculturally productive while simultaneously producing electricity and thereby eliminating present land use tradeoffs. A French vineyard in Tressere this fall\, for example\, harvested +60% more chardonnay grapes of better quality with less irrigation in its solar tracking trellis–consistent with similar recent results achieving more and better quality grapes under solar panels in Italy. \n\n\n\nBeyond clean and local electricity\, solar can do more. A lot more. When developed with agriculture or conservation in mind\, solar can do things otherwise hard or impossible to achieve. Solar can save farms\, start farms\, diversify production\, preserve and protect land\, create habitat and enhance biodiversity\, and revitalize rural communities. It already is\, here and there\, but agrivoltaics is ready to scale to new heights of productivity. \n\n\n\nWith record growth in energy demand that is forecast to endure for a generation\, America is going to need all the power it can get. And with rural America and farming communities still facing steep structural disadvantages\, the need for broad investment and a virtuous cycle of sustained growth remains acute.  \n\n\n\nCan agrivoltaics match the problems plaguing farms and farming communities with the opportunities that the solar investment tsunami could offer? What will it take to cultivate the agrivoltaics opportunity in fields far and wide\, effectively double the harvest\, and reap the full potential of this rare stack of homegrown benefits? And can the a cornucopia of electrical and agricultural performance of these dual-use systems be harnessed to cultivate another order of local economic development opportunity entirely. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this free webinar June 4 at 11AM ET for the first in a short summer series exploring these questions and surveying the incredible breakthroughs being achieved in the nexus of agriculture and energy in these agrivoltaics and ecovoltaics enabled solar farms! \n\n\n\nTo learn more or register for the 2025 Solar Farm Summit\, please visit: https://solarfarmsummit.com/ \n\n\n\nRegister: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/answering-the-energy-agriculture-emergencies-in-farming-communities-pt-1-tickets-1367565779059 \n\n\n\n\nEvent Page

SUMMARY:Iowa State University Agrivoltaics Open House
DESCRIPTION:Iowa State University\, has initiated a public-private partnership with Alliant Energy on the design and construction of the The Alliant Energy Solar Farm at Iowa State University where they explore growing crops within and around photovoltaic (PV) panels to quantify the benefits of agrivoltaic practices. At this site they explore a subset of agricultural activities most amenable to the unique environment of a solar farm\, and develop best practices for economic and environmentally sustainable production practices conducted within solar farms designed for mega-watt scale production. This partnership allows them to estimate the impact of agricultural practices around PV panels on the microclimate and subsequent PV efficiency. They will measure these potential impacts while also analyzing the multiple economic costs and values to developers\, utilities\, farmers and rural communities affecting agrivoltaic development in the Midwest. They have assembled a multi-disciplinary team\, in cooperation with public and private entities\, to address the intersecting needs of various stakeholders including but not limited to: PV developers and utilities with contracts for PV\, landowners\, and farmers interested in agrivoltaics. This DOE funded project will determine if and under what conditions agrivoltaic practices in the Midwest can benefit local food production systems and what resources are needed to assist multiple stakeholders. \n\n\n\nIowa State University is offering a 2025 Open House Series to visit the Alliant Energy Solar Farm. \n\n\n\nAlliant Energy Solar Farm 52166 260th StAmes\, IAUnited States \n\n\n\nLearn more: https://agrivoltaics.research.iastate.edu/ \n\n\n\n\nRegister
