A concerted effort to hold back China’s deserts has produced mixed results since instituted in 1978 and many trees planted to hold the deserts back died for lack of water. But solar panels can conserve water without using it by casting shade that cools the soil and contains more moisture, under which various plants can still thrive and agricultural production can gain competitive advantage akin to commercial greenhousing.
