ASGA Workshop: Financing Options for Solar Grazing Through the Sheep & Goat Innovation Fund

Solar grazing has given many graziers an opportunity to scale-up their sheep enterprise. Accompanied by this growth is the need to look for ways to finance the expansion of their solar grazing business.

For this workshop, we heard from Scott Stuart, the Managing Director of the Sheep and Goat Innovation Fund, to learn how solar graziers may be able to take advantage of this funding opportunity.

The workshop was co-hosted by Kevin Richardson (ASGA Senior Director) and Chad Raines (ASGA Treasurer and Texas-based solar grazier). Kevin began the call by sharing that ASGA recently presented to the board of directors about solar grazing at the American Sheep Industry in response to the fund recently seeing a growing interest from solar graziers. Chad then provided background on his own solar grazing experience, and the challenges with scaling-up in such a short timeframe. Chad reiterated the need for funding options available to solar graziers to help their operations continue to grow.

Following the introduction by Kevin and Chad, Scott began his presentation. He first covered the background and history of the Sheep and Goat Innovation Fund. Scott then introduced the three loan types available through the funding opportunity: Innovation, Expansion, and Production loans.

After explaining the differences between the loan types, Scott discussed the processes for applying for each of the loans. This involved reviewing the “5 C’s of Credit,” the eligibility requirements for potential borrowers, and the necessary financial information when applying.

Scott then went over the process of delivering awarded funds to the borrower. He wrapped up his presentation by sharing examples of funded projects. Kevin and Chad then opened up the workshop for a Q&A session that involved expected timelines, collateral requirements, and tips for applying for the Fund to aid your solar grazing business.
