Solar Grazing Story: Lyndsey Smith and Chris Moore, Shady Creek Lamb Co.

What happens when a pair of farmers look beyond tradition and see possibility where no one else has?
Meet Lyndsey Smith and Chris Moore of Shady Creek Lamb Company, a husband-and-wife team in Ontario who have turned a family farm with deep roots into a pioneering solar grazing enterprise.
By pairing livestock with renewable energy, Lyndsey and Chris found a solution that allowed them to expand without buying more land, and in the process, helped shape an entirely new industry in their province. Their creativity and grit led them to innovations like lambing directly on solar sites and developing winter grazing systems that keep sheep on pasture year-round, proving that good management and animal instincts can outperform expensive infrastructure.
Their journey hasn’t been simple. Tight margins, high land prices, and unpredictable challenges like flystrike have tested their resilience. But with deep agricultural roots, complementary strengths, and an unwavering belief in working with nature, they’ve built a business that keeps farmland productive, supports biodiversity, and generates clean energy, all at the same time.
