Solar Grazing Newsletter – Fall 2026

Fall 2026 Newsletter

We’re glad you’re here. Grab a cup of coffee and read on to learn what ASGA and our partners are doing to help advance agriculture on solar fields.

Photo of the Month

We had an incredible time hosting a farm-to-table dinner at Wiscovery Farms in Fitchburg, WI, with our partners! The gathering kicked off our new 501c3 and the Wisconsin Solar Grazing Network. It brought together newly certified graziers and agrivoltaic supporters from across the state and country for an evening of solar-grown food, networking, and community building.

We’re Growing!

We’re proud to announce the launch of The American Solar Grazing and Growing Association, ASGA’s 501c3 nonprofit branch. We’re dedicated to education, outreach, research, best practices, networking, and promoting the co-location of solar and all agricultural activities, including crops, honey, flowers, and, of course, grazing.

Our mission is to promote the integration of agriculture and solar energy through education, research, technical assistance, outreach, networking, mentorship, and collaboration.

Welcome, New ASGA Staff

We are excited to welcome two new ASGA staff members!

Katie Meyer is joining the ASGA team as the Outreach and Education Specialist.

Katie brings experience in education, technology, and community engagement. Building on her experience as Conference Producer and Education Director at Solar Farm Summit, Katie is excited to deepen her work connecting people, ideas, and opportunities that advance agrivoltaics. She is passionate about making complex ideas accessible, fostering collaboration, and creating opportunities for people of all ages to learn, connect, and contribute to a future where farming, renewable energy, nature, and communities thrive together.

Rebekah Pierce is joining the team as the Content Creation Specialist.

Rebekah is a farmer and freelance writer who co-owns J&R Pierce Family Farm in northern New York, where she and her husband raise sheep and cattle and manage grazing operations across multiple community solar sites. She is the author of Agri-Energy: Growing Power, Growing Food (Island Press, 2025), which explores the intersection of agriculture, renewable energy, and the future of American farmland.

The Waiting Game: Contingency Planning for Solar Grazing Operations

This fact sheet outlines practical strategies for navigating contract delays (the “waiting game”), including identifying alternative grazing opportunities, developing temporary confinement options, maintaining regular communication with solar partners, and keeping operating expenses available. Read more here.

Disease Prevention for Solar Grazing Sheep

The fact sheet outlines preventative management practices to help solar graziers reduce the risk of illness, improve flock productivity, and implement healthy sheep management practices. Read more here.

Biosecurity for Solar Grazing Operations

This fact sheet covers biosecurity practices to help manage disease risks from new animals, transported animals, and people moving through the flock. Read more here.

Solar Grazing Stories

Kade and Morgan Hodges, Solar Grazing Solutions, LLC

Kade and Morgan Hodges are a sixth-generation ranching couple from Sterling City, Texas, who found solar grazing as a way to grow their operation. This opportunity gave them a way forward, allowing them to replace lost grazing capacity while creating a new source of income for their family business.

Kaden Kurtz, Central Texas Solar Grazing

At just 20 years old, fifth-generation Texas farmer Kaden Kurtz manages roughly 2,000 ewes across 2,200 acres of solar installations, a full-time agricultural career that might not have been possible on his family’s farm alone. For Kaden, solar grazing has opened the door to a future in agriculture.

NY CLimate Week

ASGA Executive Director Stacie Peterson highlighted solar grazing’s role in supporting rural America at two New York Climate Week events, including a panel on the clean energy transition and a discussion on climate solutions. The week also featured a sold-out agrisolar farm-to-table event showcasing solar-grown foods, including solar-grazed lamb, and brought together ASGA members and partners.

Wisconsin Solar Grazing Initiative

ASGA recently celebrated 34 newly certified solar graziers at our September workshop in Madison, Wisconsin. The workshop trained participants on ASGA’s Solar Grazing Standards and included a field tour of Madison Gas and Electric’s Tyto and Strix solar sites.

The event also marked the launch of the Wisconsin Solar Grazing Initiative, a year-long program led by ASGA’s Breanna Reed to build and support Wisconsin’s agrisolar network.

This work is being done through a partnership with Clean Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin Madison Badgervoltaics, Rural Climate Partnership, and the Daybreak Fund.

Year of the Woman Farmer

We have been proud to celebrate several incredible women in the solar grazing community for the International Year of the Woman Farmer! You can read more of their stories here.

Sponsorship Update

Thanks to the support of our incredible sponsors and corporate members, ASGA continues to expand our impact and serve the growing solar grazing community. Here are a few highlights from what we’ve accomplished together.

New Conference Materials

ASGA is grateful for the many opportunities we have to attend various conferences to help spread the word about the benefits of solar grazing and agrivoltaics. With the help of our sponsors, we are unveiling new conference materials, including a 3-D model, view-master, and ASGA swag. If you are attending FFA or RE+, be sure to stop by our booth to see the materials in person!

American Solar Grazing Association and Agrivoltaic Solutions’ Solar Grazing Handbook

The ASGA-AVS Solar Grazing Handbook was commissioned by ASGA through sponsorship funding and created by Dr. Niko Kochendoerfer of Agrivoltaic Solutions, LLC (AVS). Available to students of the ASGA direct certification courses, this detailed handbook covers the ins and outs of vegetation management contracts for solar installations in the US Northeast.

Panel to Plate Recipe

There’s been a lot to celebrate in the ASGA community lately! Looking for the perfect drink to toast with?

Try our Panel to Plate recipe for Agrisolar Spritz, submitted by Stacie Peterson and first served at our Agrisolar Farm-to-Table event in Wisconsin.

Are mocktails more your style? Try Stacie’s refreshing, non-alcoholic Agrisolar Lemonade. Similar to the spritz, this drink was debuted at the Agrisolar Farm-to-Table and used solar-grown mint and honey.
